“Why does the love always seem beautiful in romantic movies and novels, but not in real life? Why should lovers not be in any relationship after they break up? Why do ex-lovers always try to deal with damages instead of staying together? If you want answers to the questions, this book is for you.”

REVIEWED BY SOHINEE DEY

The book is mainly centred at capturing the teenager’s attention. The story revolves around the two main protagonists, Siddhanth Shah and Hritisha.

Based in Dubai, Siddhanth doesn’t end up with our female protagonist right away. He doesn’t even know who she is but ends up falling for her after listening to her voice. Call me cynical, but I found this fact hard to digest. I have seen this happen in movies but I wonder if it actually happens in real life. You can like someone’s voice but love, eh, not sure. After a lot wondering and wandering, he finds that the girl was Hrishita and they end up being friends.

Set in today’s world where social media has become an inevitable part of our life, how can the characters stay away from Facebook and WhatsApp? This cannot get any more real. The endless conversations they have on Whatsapp, the words they exchange; the chats are all mentioned in the book. Very long chats, I must say.

But as every love stories have hurdles, theirs did too. Under pressure from her strict parents, Hrishita decides to move back to India, it was her father’s decision. With distance, their relationship experiences strain. As their conversations start to decrease, Siddhanth start to have stronger feelings for her. Will their relationship stand the test of time?

Siddhanth returns to India. Meanwhile, his father starts his search of finding a girl for Siddhanth. After  getting rejected by Reema and Ruchi, Siddhanth decides to propose Hrishita. I wonder why he didn’t do it before. It would have saved him the trouble! Hrishita accepts his proposal and everything goes smoothly. When their families meet, Siddhanth successfully convinces Hrishita’s father who is otherwise a hard nut to crack. But, Hrishita decides to walk away from the relationship. The author doesn’t give any answers to the questions that he leaves in the readers’ minds. He says, “I wanted my readers to find out the answers to those questions. I din not want to write my perception of the questions in the minds of my readers.”

Would I sound bad if I said that I actually liked the prologue and epilogue better than the story? Somewhere, I feel that through this book, the author shared his own life experience or maybe it was just to confuse the readers.

The book did try to portray how relationships falter when distance acts as a barrier and that some relations just fall apart yet the feeling of love doesn’t lessen. The narration and the dialogues didn’t sit well with me. The dialogues had a mixture of Hindi, English and at times Gujrati. I understand that the author tried to give a “desi” touch but I would have preferred if the whole book was in English. I would say that the final result could have been better if the book had more substance and if the scenes were detailed.

The cover and the title were really good so, I was expecting more from the book. The author has indeed tried and I wish him the best for his future endeavours.

MY FINAL VERDICT

If you are into teenage romances and don’t mind cheesy dialogues, you might like this book. But, since I am no longer a teenager nor do I like too much of “cute” names people in relationship use to address each other, I would say that I didn’t like this book much.
