REVIEWED BY SOHINEE DEY
The tile, Betrayals and Paybacks does give you an idea about the book. The first thing that would strike your mind would be that the book could be a thriller. The same happened to me and I wasn’t surprised when I guessed it right.
The story is all about love, betrayal, revenge and family. Set in a village named Tamara, the story revolves around the main protagonist, Vedant Birajdar. There are only a handful of characters in this book and in the supporting characters, there are Tarun who is Vedant’s brother; Misha and Jay Varma, Vedant’s friends.
Tamara is a burial of secrets. The secrets about Vedant’s family, it all lies in the village. One fine day, Vedant receives a voice message from Jay Varma informing him that it’s urgent and it’s about his brother Tarun. Apparently, Jay had broken his promise he made to Tarun which was a promise to never get in touch with Vedant. Vedant is dumbfounded with the whole situation. He tries to reach Jay over the phone and when he does he gets to know that Jay had committed suicide. Confused and hurt, Vedant then calls his home at Tamara only to know that his brother, Tanmay has been missing since four days. Vedanta had left the village 8 years ago. The reason hadn’t been revealed in the book right away. It is only when he returns to his village to dig out the secrets, is when we get to know everything.
The plot was good and narration was good too. All the characters played their part and were given equal screen space. The story does concern with Vedant mainly but, it doesn’t leave the other characters out of the scene. The book is fast paced and eventually, the readers will find out all the secrets that lies in Tamara.
What I felt could have been better is if the scenes were more detailed. While delivering the dialogues, if the surroundings, the environment around the characters were more descriptive, I feel the whole story would have come to life. Also, the characters could have been a bit more expressive, their reactions to different situations could have been a bit more detailed.
Overall, Paybacks and Betrayals is a good book and will be a good choice for mystery and thriller lovers.
