We are a species fueled by obsessions. Every human achievement, and every infamy, is the result of an obsession that tormented, possessed and consumed. This is a selection of poetry about solitude and other obsessions that have distracted, driven, destroyed and / or defined us. Spanning genres, styles, emotions, time & place, these works by a collective of 5 poets are a glimpse into the obsessions that have become us.
REVIEWED BY SOHINEE DEY
I have always loved poetry even when I didn’t discover this fact. During my school days, I was very fond of English literature and I particularly looked forward to the poems and have recited quite a few too. It was later in my life that I started penning poems other than reading.
I do see a major change in poetries of this generation versus how it used to be during Robert Frost’s or Wordsworth’s era. Frankly, I am not a big fan of the kind of poems (modern poetry or whatever they are called) that people swoons after these days. Just some random words put together and pressing enter after every three words without any punctuation, without any capitalisation is just not my thing. Call me old fashioned, I still crave for long poems with a rhyming scheme.
Anyways, coming to the book Solitude and Other Obsessions. From my ranting of modern poetry you might have already guessed that this book is a poetry book. This book is a compilation of 73 poems. This is more of an anthology or you could say a collaborated piece of work where different poets have written different styles of poetry. Uma Sudhindra, Binod Panda, Trupti Kalamdani, Dr. Shruti Arabatti and Saurin Desai are the main contributors in this book. There are some art pieces by Shripad Bhalero to compliment some of the poems.
Each poet have their own theme where they express their emotions through the caricature of words. Even though the themes vary from one poet to another, overall, the book caters to the theme solitude and obsessions.
Uma’s style is writing more of coherent poems with easy language that hits you right when you read it. The poems on the surface appear to be simple but the meaning are skin deep. She switches between different themes and most of all I liked the poem ‘A Restless Soul’.
Binod has more of a serious tone in his poems and he also writes more about life and it’s different stages.
Trupti has written poems mostly on love, relationships and self-love. Her poems were in accordance to cycle of life where you go through different phases and acquire new experiences and then with time you grow stronger and start to believe in yourself more than ever.
Shruti’s poems were engrossing and she played with her where you wouldn’t understand the meaning behind the words right away, you’ll have to read them again and again to uncover the true meaning.
Saurin’s poems had to do with reality and everyday life. His poems were short but there were deep meanings behind the words. ‘Regrets’ was on my favourite.
Overall, I liked the poems. Each poet have used a different style and they have talked about the themes which are pretty generic and readers would find them relatable.
MY FINAL VERDICT
This book would be good for beginner readers who are venturing into the genre of poetry and if you have a penchant for short poems with easy language, then of course you would love it.
