BLURB
Raj, a cloth merchant’s son from Delhi, lives a contemplative life in the old town of Sultanpur. He seeks meaning in his rapidly advancing nation but feels that India’s beauty is locked in the past and forgotten by the consistent desire to imitate the West.
Guided by his wise grandfather, Raj sets out to explore the source of all things spiritual, cultural and poetic – and in a series of spellbinding visions from gods and goddesses, his destiny unfolds. As he learns to be the guardian of the millions of souls who take birth in this land, he must ensure they have a truly spiritual place to call home. And so he comes face to face with the last true evil that roams the earth, the enemy of the world and the one who has brought emperors to their knees: Kali!
Of Noble Blood is an enthralling medley of drama, fantasy and history, celebrating the possibilities of glorious, timeless India.
REVIEWED BY SOHINEE DEY
Of Noble Blood is a mix of fiction and fantasy. The book is mostly focused on showcasing the spiritual aspects of life. While this is not a spiritual or a religious book, the story is influenced mainly by the Hindu religion and is set in India. The book is quite unique in its approach and the plot has a beautiful blend of Godly matter and human life. On a deeper level, through the course of the main protagonist’s life, he learns to connect with the higher energy that is thought to be maker of many lives and on this spiritual journey, he also learns more about the culture and about himself.

Growing up, Rajendra (Raj) has always been a curious soul. He always had a soft spot for everything philosophical. He wanted to understand life on a deeper level. His grandfather or as we call Dadaji has been his guide since he was a guide. Dadaji proves to be a very influential person in Raj’s life. Whenever he wants to know something, Dadaji always answers his questions without any bias and he never shows any of his preferences. He speaks as he feels.
Raj is at the point in his life where he doesn’t know what he wants from life for sure. That is when he turns to his Dadaji for guidance and knowing Raj, he asks him to follow his heart. On this route of attaining a higher level of spirituality, Raj encounters many of the well-known figurines of the Hindu religion.
Raj and Dadaji are the main characters in this book and both of them kept developing through the story. Dadaji gives Raj the much needed push to develop his character. The pace of the book is a bit slow and there aren’t too many dialogues in the narrative so, it could get a bit boring for some readers who are more into fast paced books. The language used is really beautiful. It’s simple but the way the sentences are structured, it has got this smooth flow to it which I really liked. The narration of the book was equally good. The cover though could have been something related to the plot. The current one I feel is more of a general sort of a cover.
The book is narrated from Raj’s point of view and I really enjoyed reading about the relationship he shares with his Dadaji. The climax was really good. Unlike other books where the climax seems to be rushed, in this book, it was proper and the entire story was wrapped up well.
MY FINAL VERDICT
One thing about this book is that a reader has to believe in the presence of God or else the content would feel superficial and made-up. If not, one can think of it as a fantasy. If one is too critical, he/she might not enjoy reading this book. It’s better to keep an open mind and think that everything is possible.
