HISTORICAL FICTION READATHON: THE YELLOW BIRD SINGS BY JENNIFER ROSNER MINI REVIEW

Hello Bookdragons!

We are officially at the end of this month! October flew past me so soon but this month was also special for me as I returned to book blogging πŸ’œ. I am ending this month with my last book that I read as a part of the #PanMacHistoricalReadathon.

The last book that I read for this readathon is The Yellow Bird Sings which is written by Jennifer Rosner. Thanks to Pan Macmillan India for sending me a copy of this title and for organizing the readathon.

Poland, 1941. After the Jews in their town are rounded up, Roza and her five-year-old daughter, Shira, spend day and night hidden in a farmer’s barn. Forbidden from making a sound, only the yellow bird from her mother’s stories can sing the melodies Shira composes in her head.

Roza does all she can to take care of Shira and shield her from the horrors of the outside world. They play silent games and invent their own sign language. But then the day comes when their haven is no longer safe, and Roza must face an impossible choice: whether to keep her daughter close by her side, or give her the chance to survive by letting her go . . .

The Yellow Bird Sings is a powerfully gripping and deeply moving novel about the unbreakable bond between parent and child and the triumph of humanity and hope in even the darkest circumstances.

I am still reeling from what I just read. When I say this book is brilliant and you should read it ASAP, I MEAN IT! β€οΈπŸ’œ

I am still processing and it's difficult to come up with a review. All I can say is, I recommend this book with my whole heart. This waa such a beautiful and heartbreaking piece of literature. Set around the WWII, The Yellow Bird Sings tell the story of RΓ³za and her 5 year old daughter, Shira have to flee from Poland as the Nazi army rounds up. They are forced to seek shelter at a neighbour's barn. The slightest sound from them could cost them their lives. Shira, who is a musical prodigy, is caught up in this turmoil and finds it difficult to keep her voice a secret. So, her mother, RΓ³za, creates a world of make-believe and tells her a story of a girl in an enchanted garden: "The girl is forbidden from making a sound, so the yellow bird sings. He sings whatever the girl composes in her head: high-pitched trills of piccolo; low-throated growls of contrabassoon. Music helps the flowers bloom." This book is captivating in the way it combines music and a heartbreaking story together. It is inspired by true stories of Jewish children hidden during the World War II. I felt such sadness while I read the book and at the same time Rosner's writing was so beautiful and I was mesmerized. Thank you @panmacmillanindia for sending me a copy as a part of the #PanMacHistoricalReadathon. Set around the WWII, The Yellow Bird Sings tell the story of RΓ³za and her 5 year old daughter, Shira have to flee from Poland as the Nazi army rounds up. They are forced to seek shelter at a neighbour’s barn and are in turn abused by the farmer’s family. The slightest sound from them could cost them their lives. Shira, who is a musical prodigy, is caught up in this turmoil and finds it difficult to keep her voice a secret. All these musical notes that she creates in her mind are suppressed and she is forbidden from giving them a voice, So, her mother, RΓ³za, creates a world of make-believe and tells her a story of a girl in an enchanted garden:

“The girl is forbidden from making a sound, so the yellow bird sings. He sings whatever the girl composes in her head: high-pitched trills of piccolo; low-throated growls of contrabassoon. Music helps the flowers bloom.”

This book is captivating in the way it combines music and a heartbreaking story together. It is inspired by true stories of Jewish children hidden during the World War II. This book also draws on the Holocaust. I felt such sadness while I read the book and at the same time Rosner’s writing was so beautiful and I was mesmerized. It was heartbreaking to read about all the tragic stories. This book is such an impactful read. I urge you all to read it and recommend it to your friends and family as well.
