BLOG TOUR REVIEW: WHISPERS IN THE DARK BY CHRIS McDONALD

Hello Bookdragons!

Hope you all are doing well out there and to all my Indian subscribers, a very happy Diwali to you all ✨.

Today’s my stop for the Whispers in The Dark Blog Tour. Thanks to Meggy over at Red Dog Press for my spot and for the complimentary copy. This in no way affects my views. All opinions are my own.

Who will heed the call when Death comes whispering?

Small time drug dealer, Marcus Stone and DCI Clive Burston had never met until one night in August. By the end of that night, both had been shot dead in a small bedroom in the heart of gang territory.

DI Erika Piper is called to the scene but is at a loss to explain what’s happened. How did these two even meet, let alone end up dead in what appears to be a strange murder-suicide?

As Erika leads the investigation, another two bodies are found, killed in a similar fashion. One murder, one suicide. But who is controlling this macarbre puppet show?

As Erika delves deeper into the lives of the dead, the pieces begin to fit together and a number of nefarious characters crawl out of the woodwork – one of whom is almost certainly pulling the strings.

A catastrophic event and a personal miracle threaten to derail the investigation. Erika must find the strength to continue, before the whispers catch up with her too…

Trigger Warning: Suicide, Child Abuse, Violence, Domestic abuse, Graphic descriptions of blood and murder.

You all know that I love a good crime fiction. So, I haven’t previously read any of McDonald’s books but you guys, Whispers in The Dark is amazing! This book has such great character building and I loved the whole atmosphere that Chris created in this book. You know what I always look for in a book? It might sound a bit weird but, this girl loves a good prologue and I wasn’t disappointed. Whispers in The Dark has such a great prologue! The backstory really helped me get an understanding of the setting and a little insight into the characters never hurt.

Whispers in The Dark was easy to follow and there’s a whole lot of build-up from the beginning which kept me guessing. I have to say, McDonald has an engaging writing style which keeps you hooked till the end. This modern day “Who-dunnit” weaves the thriller plot with the personal experiences of our main protagonist, DI Erika Pipers. Often times in crime fiction, from what I have read so far, I have noticed that the detective investigator or the police person always chases after the criminal and we the readers, don’t get any insight into their personal lives. So, I really loved that Erika Pipers, actually had a life and wasn’t just chasing after criminals. She is very vocal about her opinions and a really strong character overall. The characters really do shine in this book. Erika is a well-rounded character, she is badass in her job but is somewhat soft on the inside. Whispers in The Dark has a modern day setting which draws upon cyber security, online abuse, and of course, the dark web.

I loved the pacing of the book. I also loved the psychological aspect related to the characters’ actions. This is something which we don’t really see in crime fiction unless it’s a book particularly marketed as a psychological thriller. So, Chris does bridge the gap between what you would call a ‘traditional crime fiction’ and a psychological thriller. Although I didn’t read the first installment in this series, Whispers in The Dark read perfectly fine as a standalone. The ending was definitely shocking! So, I guess there will be more books in the series? Well, I can’t wait to read the next one!

If you are someone who enjoys crime fiction and doesn’t mind the gore, Whispers in The Dark is perfect for you. So, go ahead and add this book to your TBR and while you are at it, please do read A Wash of Black as well.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Originally hailing from the north coast of Northern Ireland and now residing in South Manchester, Chris McDonald has always been a reader. At primary school, The Hardy Boys inspired his love of adventure before his reading world was opened up by Chuck Palahniuk and the gritty world of crime. A Wash of Black is his first attempt at writing a book. He came up with the initial idea whilst feeding his baby in the middle of the night, which may not be the best thing to admit, considering the content. He is a fan of 5-a-side football, heavy metal and dogs. Whispers in the Dark is the second installment in the DI Erika Piper series, and Chris is currently working on his latest series, The Stonebridge Mysteries, to be published by Red Dog Press in 2021.
