BLOG TOUR REVIEW: THE GILDED ONES BY NAMINA FORNA

Hello Bookdragons!

Hope you all are doing well and making your way through your TBRs! I am still struggling with the reading slump and have only managed to read one book this month, so far.

Today’s my stop on The Gilded Ones Book Tour hosted by Hear Our Voices Book Tours. Thanks to the publisher and HOVBT for the review copy and for my spot on the tour. You can find the full tour schedule here.

The Gilded Ones was one of my anticipated books and I am so happy that I got the chance to read it! Unfortunately, I couldn’t finish reading the book because of my slump and since it was a digital copy, it became a bit difficult to read since I am not accustomed to e-copies and they really strain my eyes.

Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs.

But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity–and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.

Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki–near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire’s greatest threat.

Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she’s ever known. But as she journeys to the capital to train for the biggest battle of her life, she will discover that the great walled city holds many surprises. Nothing and no one are quite what they seem to be–not even Deka herself.

I have only been able to read 82 pages but from what I have read, I can tell that the characters are fleshed out really well. The world-building is detailed and its perfect for a newbie fantasy reader like me. I am loving Deka’s character. There’s nothing better than reading about a strong spirited sixteen year old defying old traditional ways of “acceptance” and being inspired by her! I admire her courage and her will to fight back against all the injustices. I would also like to mention Britta, who is a side character but plays an equally important role in the progression of the plot, just like Deka. Also, can we take a moment and really appreciate the gorgeous cover? I was already sold when I saw it! I am loving reading about the alaki-women and the strong bonding they share. A strong bonding between women who uplift each other, and thereby tackle the issues of the patriarchal empire reminds me a lot about how Alice Walker explored the concept of Black Feminism in The Colour Purple. This book also discusses racism, sexism, feminism, sexuality and gender identity.

I’ll be updating this review once I finish reading it. In the meantime, let me know what you thought about The Gilded Ones or what’s that one book that you are really looking forward to read in the comments down below ❤
